Why I Want to Teach Music.

I chose to join band in the fifth grade, because I listened to the titanic soundtrack growing up. I fell in love with the sounds of the brass, primarily the trumpet and french horn. I chose trumpet and it was the best decision i have ever made. I kind of picked up the trumpet rather quick and by the seventh grade I was moved up ahead of my class to the high school band, and in eighth grade I became first chair and was not challenged for it until college. I decided that music was my calling when I began working with the younger groups and the way I taught was easier for them to understand than my band director’s pedagogy style. I have taught brass at a few high schools and junior high schools throughout the years always with great results.

Picking two people that has influenced my teaching style and philosophy of teaching is quite simple. Dr. Barrow and Jeff Peters are my role models in these aspects of my life. Jeff is a big picture kind of guy. He will always be sure that the outcome is what was desired and help kids get there. Jeff also, plays and is an example of what he wants to hear from his students. Dr. Barrow teaches using objects and analogies, which is something that I plan on doing with pretty much everything. For an example: He once explained an accelerando by dropping a bouncy ball on the ground and listening to the ball dropping because it will get faster as the ball bounces more.
